Polygonaceae

The Knotweed Family

Polygonaceae has several economically important species within it, such as buckwheat, sea grapes, and rhubarb. It also features some prolific weedy species, such as sorrel, dock, black bindweed, and smartweed, as well as the notorious Wisconsin invasive Japanese Knotweed. A notable feature of this family is the fleshy sheaths around the leaf nodes.
