An ancient family, Isoetaceae has only one extant genus - Isoetes. They are spore-bearing lycopods, like club-mosses. There are around 200 species with a cosmopolitan distribution, but they're pretty rare and scattered throughout. We have two species in the Northwoods: Isoetes echinospora and Isoetes lacustris.
