Hypericaceae
The St. John's wort Family
Hypericaceae has two genera that appear in temperate regions, both of which are shown below. This family has mildly phototoxic qualities, and can lead to blistering sunburns with frequent handling. St. John's wort is the most recognizable species in Hypericaceae, and can be identified by gently squeezing the petals. When they are mature, it will leave behind reddish-purple staining on the fingers. It is also a popular folk remedy.
