Cornaceae
The Dogwood Family
Cornaceae is a contentious family with ongoing genetic reconfigurations. It primarily consists of shrubs and trees, though there are a few perennial forbs (like our specimen). A neat trick that works for identifying all members of the genus Cornus is to gently tear the leaf in half horizontally - the fibers of the veins will create an illusion of the bottom half of the leaf floating!
