Colchicaceae

Formerly included in Liliaceae

This is a relatively new family, and it was separated from Liliaceae. The majority of the genera included in this family are native to Australia and South Africa, with the exception of Uvularia. Some recognizable plants from this family are some species of crocus, as well as saffron. The presence of colchicine is what characterizes this family, and it is a compound that is used to treat gout.
