Characeae is not a family of plants at all, but freshwater green algae. Some other common names are brittleworts and skunkweed. These are apt and descriptive names as they tend to have very fragile stems, and many species (Chara) emit a foul odor when crushed or disturbed. Characeae has the most complex form of any green algae.
