Alismataceae
The Arrowhead Family
This family is found all over the Northwoods, and it prefers to live in the shallows of lakes, though it will also grow in wetlands. The most common species we find is Sagittaria cuneata, though Sagittaria latifolia is nearly as common. Some common names include arrowhead, duck potato, swamp potato, and katniss. Sagittaria has long been an important food source for indigenous groups, not only in the Northwoods, but across the entire range.
