  • Wildlife Tracking Skills Workshop
    December 5-6, 2009
    Crex Meadows Wildlife Area, Grantsburg, WI

    Come join noted carnivore ecologist and renowned tracker Dr Jim Halfpenny for a two-day tracking workshop December 5-6, 2009. This in-depth class will cover track and sign identification, understanding footprints, and interpreting gait with an emphasis on reading trails to understand animal behavior and ecology. The workshop includes classroom lectures and in-the-field training. This class will provide training for those who want to be involved with the WI DNR’s Volunteer Carnivore Tracking Program assisting with the winter wolf counts as well as any enthusiast who wants to hone their tracking skills.

    The workshop fee is $165 ($155 TWA members).
    This includes registration, meals, and all workshop materials. LODGING IS NOT INCLUDED.

    Lodging is available at the Lodge at Crooked Lake in Siren about 15minutes from Grantsburg. A block of rooms is reserved under “Wildlife Tracking”. If you would like to share a room to reduce housing costs please contact TWA coordinator Anna Cellar for information. There is no guarantee of the availability of shared rooms.

    Dr. James Halfpenny is one of the world's foremost professional wildlife trackers and a widely renowned scientist and educator. Dr. Halfpenny is the founder of A Naturalist's World, and educational tracking adventure company, and is a former research associate at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at the University of Colorado. He was an instructor at the National Outdoor Leadership School and served as director of the Mountain Research Station. He has taught tracking since 1967. In addition to numerous scientific and popular articles, he is author of A Field Guide to Mammal Tracking in North America and Winter: An Ecological Handbook.
