Meet Our Staff...

Mark Charon - Buildings & Grounds Supervisor
Mark’s work with the Center began in the capacity of volunteer, helping out in a variety of areas, before officially joining the Discovery Center team in May of 2005. Mark has brought his attention to detail to the task of keeping the Center’s Buildings and Grounds in good working order. Aging facilities means there is never a shortage of jobs for which he is responsible. However, because Mark likes thinking and working outside the box of job descriptions and because of his passion for the Discovery Center Mission, he also enjoys helping out the Center in many capacities, including teamwork with staff, interns and volunteers on programs. His graphic design talents are also put to good use for the benefit of the Center. Mark enjoys many outdoor activities and making art in his spare time. mark@discoverycenter.net

Bruce Greenhill - Executive Director
Bruce joined the staff of The Discovery Center in May 2001 and was appointed Executive Director in March 2007. Over the years his duties have included everything from member recruitment and communication to advertising and promotion; from volunteer coordination to bookkeeping and payroll. A native of Melbourne, Australia, Bruce graduated from the Melbourne Institute of Technology with Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Policy and later worked in rural and regional planning, and environmental and cultural tourism. According to Bruce, one of the many great aspects of working at The Center is that all who enter the grounds - whether program participants, volunteers or staff - are of kindred spirit. All are lovers of the outdoors who share a concern for the protection of the Northwoods. As he says: “…they’re good folk to be around”. He is always keen to talk about the many ways community members can get involved in Center activities. bruce@discoverycenter.net

Licia Johnson - Naturalist/Educator
Licia joined the Discovery Center team in spring 2007 as a seasonal Environmental Educator. In December 2007 she was appointed permanent naturalist/educator. Licia graduated from Carroll College in Waukesha, WI in May 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resource Conservation and Geography. Following graduation, Licia taught environmental education in WI before heading west to WA where she was an Outdoor Environmental Education instructor at a YMCA Camp, before becoming their program director. A native of the Northwoods, Licia returned to teach others and help them gain an appreciation for this amazing part of the world! In addition to teaching environmental education and public programs, Licia is the coordinator of sales/retail, interpretive trails, and program supplies and equipment. She also cares for the Center’s resident critters including fish, salamanders, caterpillars and butterflies. When not at work, Licia enjoys reading, crafting, stamping, skiing and anything that gets her outside! licia@discoverycenter.net

Zach Wilson - Naturalist / Woods and Waters Coordinator
Zach graduated from Northland College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Outdoor Education & Natural History in 2000. He was the Program Director and Wilderness guide for Lake Trails Base Camp in Lake of the Woods, MN for 4 years, and has also traveled to 15 countries learning about environmental issues, organic faming practices and culture. Before joining the Discovery Center in 2002, Zach decided to move back to his home town and practice the philosophy of "Acting Locally and Thinking Globally". He strongly believes in community and integrating the natural world into everyday life. In addition, to his responsibilities as Staff Naturalist, Zach serves as the coordinator for the Woods & Waters project that involves high school students from Mercer and Hurley, studying the ecology of the fisher and common loon. zach@discoverycenter.net

In addition to the permanent staff listed above, from time to time The Center also draws on the diverse talents of a gifted and committed group of environmental educators - our part-time teachers. Among them are:

Terry Daulton
Terry Daulton is an environmental educator, field biologist and artist. She conducts education programs for The Center and provides expertise on specific environmental topics and programs. She has a master's degree in environmental education from University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. Her pastel paintings can be seen at galleries in Mercer, Boulder Junction and Ironwood. She lives in Mercer, Wisconsin.

Kris Henker
Kris Henker has her Bachelor’s degree in The Biological Aspects of Conservation from the University of WI and is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Natural Health. Kris currently lives in Manitowish Waters where she works with a variety of not for profit organizations.

Sarah Johnson
Sarah Johnson joined the Discovery Center in 2004, working her way from an internship to full-time Program Director. Sarah recently resigned her position at the Center to become a full-time mom. Leaving the Discovery Center family was a difficult decision, but Sarah plans to stay connected by continuing to teach Environmental Education and working on special projects including Bird Festival and the Just Tri It Triathlon. Sarah graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor’s in History and Education. She is currently working on her Master’s in Environmental Education from the University of Minnesota.
