Sustainable Design Tour:
Smart Home and Landscape Building
& Remodeling

Saturday, October 3, 2009

The North Lakeland Discovery Center and Sauter Builders, Inc announce the first annual Sustainable Design Tour on Saturday, October 3 rd from 12:30 - 5:00pm . The event is designed to educate and inform participants on principles of sustainability and energy-efficiency as related to homes and landscaping. The guided tour will feature four sites, each highlighting various aspects of eco-friendly design. The tour is appropriate for homeowners interested in remodeling or landscaping, for buyers interested in purchasing, or for those interested in home building and landscape design principles.

The tour features three homes, each with a unique story and features. Participants will visit a Mercer home designed and built by our event host sponsor, Sauter Builders Inc of Boulder Junction. Sauter Builders is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and Wisconsin Green Built Home, as well as a certified Performance Builder in the Wisconsin Energy Star Homes Program. Another stop will be in Presque Isle, at a home built by partner sponsor Butternut Creek, LLC of Arbor Vitae, builders of high performance log and timber frame homes. Butternut Creek is an authorized dealer for Timberpeg, Strongwood Log Homes, and Enercept structural insulated panels. Sauter Builders and ButternutCreek representatives will be at their respective homes, providing insight and information related to the home’s features. The final home on the tour, located between Manitowish Waters and Mercer, is a work-in-progress home built by Discovery Center Naturalist Zach Wilson. Speaking form the perspective of the do-it-yourself builder, Wilson will share his knowledge, experiences and outcomes.

Rich Urban, a consultant for the Wisconsin ENERGY STAR Homes Program, will be on hand to present an energy audit of Wilson ’s home. The test provides homeowners and potential buyers an opportunity to gather tips on how to improve a home’s energy efficiency.

The landscape portion of the tour will take place on Discovery Center grounds. The Center has been fortunate to receive donor-directed support for grounds and facilities projects over the past year. A part of these donations have allowed for a project to be carried forth in highlighting native landscape plantings and a rain garden around the main lodge. Sponsors Hanson’s Garden Village of Rhinelander and Integrity Landscaping of Hazelhurst did the landscape work, and made the project affordable by designating the Discovery Center as a recipient of their Xtreme Garden Makeover Grant. Brent Hanson of Hanson’s Garden Village will present the project and will share his expertise and vision as related to sustainable landscape design.

The event will conclude at the Discovery Center with an informative mingling session. All event sponsors will be on hand to share information and to answer questions as related to sustainable design products and services. Beverages including complimentary wine donated by sponsor The Wine Barn, will be available alongside a delicious selection of hors d’oeuvres by Pine Barons.

Registrations must be received by Monday, September 28th, at $50/individual or $85/couple. Please contact the Discovery Center to sign up for this exciting event 715-543-2085 or toll-free 877-543-2085.

Please support our sponsors – be sure to thank them next time you are in their place of business!
