Dear Friend,

Hi and welcome to another issue of Discover-E-News - the electronic newsletter designed to keep you up-to-date and informed about everything that is going on at your Center.

A SUMMER CHOCK FULL OF...
...Programs, Classes, Events, Camps and Activities, by the shores of Statehouse Lake
So far this summer the Discovery Center campus has been extremely busy and active - and that's just the way we like it!  Excellent programs and vastly improved facilities is a big part of the reason.  So too, the growth in outreach programs is contributing to raising the Center's profile.  Our Traveling Naturalists regularly deliver programs in area libraries, resorts and camps, thereby exposing The Discovery Center to a broader audience.  Once people get to experience the Center's powerful message of connection and stewardship at one of those off-site presentations, many are drawn to visit the Center where they check out our trails, Nature Nook exhibits or on-campus programs.  I have no doubt that you, dear reader, as a loyal and supportive member, are also helping to spread the word by "talking up" the Center to friends, family and neighbors.  So a heartfelt thank-you to all who are helping us maintain that momentum.  Together we can contribute to a growing awareness of our existence and interest in our programs.  The more lives we touch, the greater the number of folk we engage in the process of understanding, valuing and ultimately looking after our remarkable Northwoods. That, after all, is why we do what we do!
SPEND A WEEKEND WITH...
...Wolves!
Join the Timber Wolf Alliance (TWA) for a Weekend with Wolves wolf ecology workshop.  Learn about wolf ecology, wolf monitoring techniques, and the latest wolf issues from specialist biologists and educators.  Time will be spent in the classroom and in the field, surveying wolf pack territories. Participants will assist with wolf howling surveys and learn techniques in wolf tracking and radio telemetry. This workshop meets the ecology qualifications for becoming a DNR Volunteer Carnivore Tracker assisting with the winter wolf counts.

The workshop will be held at the North Lakeland Discovery Center.  It begins at 8:00a.m. Saturday August 8 and ends 1:00p.m. Sunday August 9.  Workshop fees include meals, bunkhouse accommodations, and all workshop materials.  Pre-registration is required.  $90 TWA member $110 non-members

For more information or to register, contact TWA coordinator Anna Cellar at (877) 543-2085, or click the following link to send her an email: Anna, tell me more
HOW DEEP IS YOUR...
 ...Lake?
As reported in an earlier issue of this publication, the Discovery Center took on a new endeavor this past spring - a lake water level monitoring project. Working with the UW's Trout Lake Limnology lab we are recording the changing water level of Statehouse Lake, and have successfully recruited, equipped and trained volunteers to provide similar monitoring and data recording on six other lakes. We received word that funding for additional monitoring equipment may be available, so we hope to recruit a few more volunteers to expand the project next spring, summer and fall. If you are interested in monitoring your own lake or otherwise learning more about the project, please join Program Director Anna Cellar here at the Center at 10 am on Monday August 24.
WE JUST WANT TO CELEBRATE...
...Strongheart
As many readers of this fine publication will know, Discovery Center volunteers recently completed restoration of a 25 ft, 1926 Old Town wood and canvas canoe.  Strongheart was re-launched at the Discovery Center on Thursday June 25, 2009.  Members, local media and the general public joined the volunteers and others associated with the project to view a photographic display of the restoration process and enjoy a performance of an original song written to commemorate the event. To view the slide show of the restoration and launch event click here: View the Slide Show

In a local newspaper story about the event, Discovery Center Executive Director Bruce Greenhill was quoted: "This is what the Discovery Center is all about - people coming together to achieve a common vision, experiencing the joy of knowing collective labors will benefit the community!"  With room for 6-8 adults or 10-11 kids, Strongheart is sure to become a well-used and much loved addition to the Discovery Center's already-outstanding program resources.  You can go for a paddle in Strongheart (and learn a little about Voyageur history) at this week's Loon Day (Wednesday August 5) in Mercer.  Call the Center at 543-2085 to register for a ride, or sign up at the Discovery Center booth in Mercer on Loon Day.

BIRTHDAYS WITH...
 ...Flash the Ferret!
Any parent of a young child has no doubt been to various Northwoods venues to celebrate the birthdays of young friends.  In addition to the living rooms, lakefronts and back yards of friends and family, my son and I have eaten cake and ice-cream at water parks, bowling alleys, hotel pools, ball fields, pizza joints, ski hills, mini golf centers, and as he got older, go-kart tracks and even in the cafeteria following a scuba-dive in the high-school pool.  Next time you are planning a birthday celebration, please consider the Discovery Center as a unique party location.  You provide the cake and other refreshments, let the Discovery Center provide: time in our Nature Nook with Flash the Ferret, a naturalist-led activity, a craft project resulting in a special something for every party-goer to take home, and a photographic memento for the birthday boy or girl.  And of course - a space to open gifts and eat cake and ice-cream!  For more information or to request a brochure about the Center's Birthdays with Flash program, please call Licia Johnson at 715.543.2085 or click here to email her
WE 'LL GET BY WITH ...
...a little help from our friends!

The Center will always depend on member and community support.  Without that monetary and volunteer support, we simply could not hope to achieve the sort of program success we excitedly witness each day.  One of the many great aspects of the role of Executive Director is the joy I feel whenever I have the opportunity to say thank-you for all you do.  I never cease to be amazed by the generosity of spirit I experience in response to our regular calls for help.  I am confident our Discovery Center family will again respond positively to the following very important help requests:

Volunteers
- two critical needs - administrative assistance/receptionists and nature center docents.
  1. Throughout the summer we are blessed to have regular office help from a core of committed volunteers, but as fall approaches, we find ourselves facing some gaps in our office volunteers' schedule.  Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are particularly in need of coverage.  If phones, copiers and computers don't scare you and you would like to be the first face seen by Discovery Center visitors, we'd love to hear from you!  Please  click here to send an email to Bruce. We will then arrange for one of our current office volunteers to call you to explain the job and answer any questions you may have.
  2. As you have read elsewhere, this has been a wonderfully busy summer on the DC campus.  One of the many recent campus improvements was the opening of our Nature Nook - a modest yet very effective collection of educational displays and activities complete with some live critters - most notably Flash the Ferret who has quickly attained rock-star status among many of our regular younger visitors!  We plan to recruit and train a core of volunteer docents to ensure visitors to the Center get maximum value and enjoyment from their visits to the Nature Nook and other drop-in facilities.  So if you or somebody you know might be interested in being part of our Nature Nook schedule, we'd love to hear from you.  We want our docents to have a meaningful volunteer experience so if you provide time and energy - we will provide orientation and support. Financial
In the midst of increases in outreach programs, attendance, and heightened community awareness of the Center and all we do, we are challenged to make ends meet. Your Discovery Center is not immune to the challenges of the current economy. Due to State budget cuts we lost a good sized government contract, along with a couple of facility use clients whose funding went away.  As the assets of many foundations shrink significantly, operating support grant revenue is subsequently down. And like many not-for profits, the average gift per donor is less this year, as individuals are similarly affected by the economic downturn.  So my plea is simple but urgent: if we are to retain staffing and program support at present levels, we need your help. When your membership renewal notice arrives in the mail, please respond promptly and positively. And if your membership is not immediately up for renewal, please consider an additional gift to our end-of-summer special gift appeal, details of which will be forthcoming. You can also help us by becoming an active booster - pass Discovery Center program guides along to friends and associates, drawing their attention to the member/donor information on page 20 and let your associates know what a wonderful facility we now offer for camps, meetings, weddings and other family celebrations!  We are in this together folks - with your help we will maintain our momentum and continue to be a source of ever-growing community pride.
