Registration Information

  • Advance registration for all programs is strongly advised. Walk-in participants are not necessarily assured a spot, as many programs fill in advance. To ensure you get to participate in the program of choice PREREGISTER!
  • Family Rates are available for certain programs. This rate will be $2 per child under 16 when accompanied by full fee paying adult(s) (unless noted otherwise).
  • A Sibling Discount ($10 off) will be available for Adventure Club programs.
  • This year we are offering Super-memberships for weekly returning participants to our youth series programs. Supermembers can sign up at a discounted rate. The rate for a Discover Your World Supermember is only $55.00, and an Adventure Club Supermember rate is only $220.00. Please contact the Discovery Center for more details.
  • Most programs have limited space available, so please call or email to make your reservation early.
  • It is especially important to register for our monthly Nibbles and Knowledge programs so we can be sure an adequate supply of hors d'oeuvres are on hand.

  • Please register Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at (877) 543-2085. You may also register by emailing at least 3 days in advance at register@discoverycenter.net.   • Members have the privilege of preregistering by charging program fees to their account.  However, for programs with waiting lists, payment is due at registration.

W, 5/6 Brown Bag: Edible Pansy Ravioli Adult
12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Daylily Blueberry pancakes?  Whitefish with Dianthus Beurre Blanc?  Herb and Johnny-Jump-Up Cheese Turine? Cooking with flowers is an artful way to add flavor and color to your cuisine as well as your vase. Join Cheryl Bowen as we make and taste some pansy ravioli. Held at the Manitowish Waters Library. Donations welcome.

F-S, 5/15 – 5/16 2009 Birding Festival Adult, Family
6:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Hosted by the DiscoveryCenter Bird Club, the DiscoveryCenter, and in partnership with the Manitowish Waters Chamber of Commerce; join us for the 5 th annual Birding Festival. Explore the wonders of birding in Wisconsin’s Northwoods during peak migration. Great Lakes area ornithological experts offer programs and trips aimed at improving birding skills and knowledge, and understanding habitat and conservation measures. This year’s featured speaker is Andy Paulios, Coordinator for the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative. W, 5/20 Murray’s Landing Turtle-Flambeau Flowage Canoe/Kayak Outing Adult, Family
9:00a.m.-12:30 p.m.: This is a different approach to our typical canoe outings. We’re inviting you to join the naturalist from the Discovery Center on an “open waters” canoe trip. Bring your own canoe/kayak or rent one from the Discovery Center . There will be a shuttle with canoe trailer at the Discovery Center where you can join the group or just meet us at Murray ’s Landing. Preregistration Required Donations for shuttle appreciated.

F, 5/22 Bog Beauties: Flowers of the Wetland Adult
9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Northern Wisconsin bogs are very unique ecosystems that contain a variety of fascinating plants. On this guided hike, participants will take a close look at the specially adapted vegetation, paying close attention to the rare and impressive orchids found in our Northwoods bogs. $10 member $12 non-member $8 youth 16 and under.  

Su, 5/24 The Big Event Fundraiser and SocialAdult
4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Our annual “FUNraiser” is bigger than ever this year. Join us for a spectacular evening. Enjoy gourmet appetizers while bidding on your favorite Silent Auction items. Take your chances at our new Quick Pix raffle table. Also new this year, we will have a LIVE Auction following a full dinner catered by Skyview Lodge. Wine will be provided by Dennis Kohl of Trig’s Cellar 70. This event is open to Discovery Members and the general public at only $20 per person, $25 at the door.

T, 5/26 Birding By Ear… and remembering it next year Adult
9:00-10:30 a.m. Have you ever wondered what kind of bird was creating that wonderful song from deep in the forest or from the top of trees? How about that bird that wakes you up in the wee hours of the morning? Here’s your chance to learn about 20 common and not so common bird songs of the Northwoods. Join naturalist Zach Wilson as he shares his secrets for remembering these incredible singers. $5 per person

S, 5/30 Waterfall and Geology Tour Adult
9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Join Discovery Center naturalists as we tour a number of waterfalls at their most intense (after thaw). Bring along a few extra dollars for a lunch stop along the way. Preregistration Required. Transportation provided; easy rating. $20 member $25 non-member.

7:30 Join Naturalist Troy Walters as you explore the world of birds as day turns to night. Learn about amazing woodcock habits including the predictable sky dance, the incessant namesayer whip-poor-will, the declining nighthawk, and mysterious owls. As we explore the lives of these astounding creatures, a better understanding is gained and even further respect is garnered. After the powerpoint presentation, those interested can venture into the woods with Troy in search of the barred owl and other night vocalists. $8 members $10 nonmembers

T, 6/9 PresqueIsleRiver Canoe Trip Adult, Family
9:00a.m.-12:30 p.m.Come join the Discovery Center naturalist on a new river outing. Paddle the pristine headwaters of the Presque Isle River containing a wonderful diversity of wildlife. Transportation provided. Canoe and kayak rentals available, additional rental rates apply. Preregistration Required $20.00 member $25.00 non-member, $15 youth 16 and under

W, 6/10 LakeLevel Monitoring Adult
10:00-11:00 am Water levels in many Wisconsin lakes have changed substantially over the past decade. The Discovery Center and the Trout Lake UW Limnology Station have created a program for citizen scientists to track the water levels trends on their own lakes. A discussion on lake health and ecology will be followed by a demonstration of how lake level monitoring equipment is used on the Discovery Center’s Statehouse Lake. Donations appreciated.

Th, 6/11 Nibbles ‘n Knowledge: Bats and BeyondAdult
5:00 – 7:30 p.m. It is June in Wisconsin and the female bats in maternity colonies have just given birth to a single pup.  Paul White, and David Redell of the Wisconsin DNR will present some of the amazing features of this group of elusive creatures rarely seen and often under appreciated.  Bat biology, ecology, life-history, and conservation efforts in Wisconsin, including a new citizen science monitoring program, are a few of the evening's topics.  Learn how to get involved, have some fun, and experience the night time world of eight insectivorous bat species in the process. Start your night with complimentary appetizers, a cash bar, and mingling prior to this evening’s entertaining presentation. $12 member $15 non-member.

F, 6/12 Wildlife Pontoon Boat Tour: Turtle-Flambeau Flowage Scenic Waters Area Adult
3:00-6:00 p.m Located in South-Central Iron County, this 22,343 acres flowage has 212 miles of shoreline, is 90 percent state owned, includes 195 Islands and offers many opportunities to enjoy wildlife in a remote and wild setting. The Wildlife Pontoon Boat Tour has space for 8 participants and is guided by a professional naturalist. The tour follows the wild shores of the Turtle Flambeau Flowage, providing wildlife viewing opporturnities along the way. You may come upon breathtaking views of nesting eagles and ospreys, catch a glimpse of the common loon, or even discover mink fishing on the shore. Space is limited for this unique wildlife experience. Preregistration Required $15 members $20 non-member

9:00 – 11:30a.m. Rocks are beautiful materials that have so many uses rocks can become anything! Join us to learn about the different kinds of rocks we have as well as create a rock garden and your own pet rock! We’ll have a “rockin” good time! 5 – 10 year olds. $8 member $10 non-member.

T, 6/16 Adventure Club: Fishing Tournament Youth
9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Try your hand at catching a variety of different fish. We’ll stop by several different lakes where you can catch anything from Bass to Bluegills. Prizes will be awarded in this catch and release competition. Please bring your own fishing gear if available. Transportation provided; pack a lunch. 11 – 14 year olds. $30 member $35 non-member.

M, 6/22 Discover Your World: Boozhoo! (Hello!) Let’s explore our culture! Youth
9:00 – 11:30a.m. We are very lucky to be living in an area that is filled with rich culture and history. Join us to learn about our local Native American culture through crafts and activities as well as explore the neat Voyageur history of the area. 5 – 10 year olds. $8 member $10 non-member.

T, 6/23 Adventure Club: Kayaking the Mighty ManitowishRiver Youth
9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Join us for this all-day paddle on the mighty Manitowish River . Along the way we search for wildlife and stop for a picnic lunch and a few games. Transportation and canoes provided; pack a lunch. 11 – 14 year olds. $30 member $35 non-member.

W, 6/24 Wilderness Navigation: How to use a GPS, Map and Compass Adult
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Have you ever been lost in the woods? This workshop focuses on “Orienteering” an activity that uses a map and compass to travel from marker to marker or navigate through a unknown area. Participants in this class will learn to read a map, use a compass, use a map and compass together, use specialized orienteering techniques, and get a taste of how a GPS may help you in the field. 2-3 hours $10 member $12 nonmember

1:30 p.m. Join a Discovery Center naturalist as they tell the story behind the dream catcher and instructs participants in making one of their own. All materials provided. This is a ‘Traveling Naturalist’ program and will be held at the Minocqua Public Library. Appropriate ages: 7-Adult. 1:00-4:00 Over the last 12 months volunteer worked to restore a beautiful wood/canvas Old Town war canoe. Join us for the official unveiling and maiden voyage of this twenty-five foot canoe. Bring the whole family for a ride on Statehouse Lake . Donations appreciated.

F, 6/26 Heron Rookery Trip Adult
12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Discovery Center staff will lead participants to a unique and impressive bird habitat and breeding grounds – a Great Blue Heron rookery located in nearby Iron County . We will bird along the 1 mile moderate hike to the rookery so be sure to bring your binoculars. Transportation provided. Preregistration required $15 member $18 non-member.

S, 6/27 Just Tri It Triathlon Adult, Family, Youth (over 13)
9:00 a.m. 300-yard swim; 10km mountain bike; and 5km trail run. Check-in and same day (limited) registration from 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. with racer orientation at 8:30 a.m. Race starts at 9:00 . Pre-register by June 19 th to assure your spot, claim your complimentary t-shirt and to receive a discount rate. M, 6/29 Wolf Ecology Family
6:00 p.m. In northern Wisconsin it is once again possible to hear the howl of the gray wolf. Join Anna Cellar, TWA coordinator, as she discusses the history, biology, and status of the wolves throughout the region as well as a hands-on look at wolf pelts, skulls, plaster casts, scat, and the tools that researchers use to study wolves. $ 5 per person

T, 6/30 Adventure Club: Lake Superior Jaunt Youth
9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Beach-combing, waterfalls, wading and much more at our magical Great Lake ! Transportation provided; pack a lunch. 11 – 14 year olds. $30 member $35

T, 6/30 “The Life of Beethoven” by Traveling Latern Family
10:00 a.m. The Discovery Center is hosting the area libraries’ summer play, “The Life of Beethoven”. The performance, sponsored by the Boulder Junction Public Library, the Koller Memorial Library, the Presque Isle Public Library, and the Winchester Public Library, is held in the Center’s outdoor amphitheatre overlooking Statehouse Lake. This unique setting brings a whole new light to the actors and the play. The actor group “Traveling Lantern” will perform the production…open to all ages. Donations appreciated.

1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Earthworms are not native to the Great Lakes Region. The current population, brought here by early Europeans, is slowly changing the face of our native forests. Join Discovery Center naturalists as they coax the worms out of the ground so they can be used for study. $5 per person

Th, 7/2 Nature Craft: Environmental Easel
1:30 p.m. Join a Discovery Center naturalist as we collect materials found in nature and create a number of art projects. This is a ‘Traveling Naturalist’ program and will be held at the Minocqua Public Library. Join us in beautifying the library’s garden with special hand-made stepping stones! 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.Aquatic Invasive Species have never tasted so good !
If you have found your self discouraged after learning about invasive species and the damage they can do to an ecosystem, it’s time to learn how you can fight back… eat ‘em! That’s right, first we’ll explore these invaders and then we’ll follow up the presentation with a Rusty Crayfish boil. Take home creative recipes for helping our lakes and filling bellies. $8 member $10 nonmember

Th, 7/9 Fishermentor Day Youth
7:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Children, ages 7-13, are invited to join the area’s best guides and fishermen and women. This year, participants will meet at the Rest Lake Boat Landing, located directly across from the Discovery Center on Hwy W, pair up with their guide for the day, head out for a couple hours of fishing and meet back at Rest Lake for a traditional shore lunch and a special guest- BASSMEISTER! The Bassmeister mixes comedy, puppets, and ventriloquism to discuss water and sun safety, and fishing pointers. Registration required by 7/8; transportation provided. Event sponsored by Team Retreat. Donations appreciated.

9:00 – 11:30a.m . No, we are not heading to Australia, BUT we will be exploring the lies beneath our feet! Explore the sand, mud, and dirt that we walk on every day to discover what critters call this interesting place home. 5 – 10 year olds. $8 member $10 non-member.

M, 7/13 Citizen Science Monitoring: Wolf Tracking with Telemetry Adult
12:30 p.m.– 5:00 p.m. Learn the skill of radio tracking with Timber Wolf Alliance coordinator Anna Cellar as we locate a local wolf pack through radio telemetry. Background on the history and biology of wolves, and the tools used to study these captivating animals will be provided before we head out into the field. Transportation provided. Pack a lunch. Preregistration required $15 members $18 nonmembers $12 youth 16 and under. Register by 7/10.

T, 7/14 Adventure Club: Turtle Flambeau Flowage Wildlife Boating Tour Youth
9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Join us for a wildlife watching tour along the peaceful waters of the beautiful Turtle Flambeau Flowage. We will stop and explore various islands along the flowage throughout the day. Transportation provided; Pack a lunch. 11 – 14 year olds. $30 member $35

Th, 7/16 Nature Craft: Natural Dyes
6:30 p.m. Be creative with dyes made out of materials found in nature. Join a Discovery Center naturalist as they instruct you on creating your own natural dyes. With the dyes provided, participants can create watercolor pictures or tie-dye a white bandana. This is a ‘Traveling Naturalist’ program and will be held at the Minocqua Public Library. 10:00 a.m. It’s never too early to learn about our amazing natural world! In a program designed for those 3-5 in age, we will read a story and be involved in an activity or craft relating to something in nature. $5 per person

F, 7/17 Sailing Lessons Youth, Adult
9:00 – 12:00 p.m. Learn the basics of sailing with experienced sailing instructors. Sunfish boats provided or feel free to bring your own. $20 person – ages 8+ welcome.

S, 7/18 Annual Meeting                     Adult
10:00 a.m. All members and interested members are invited to attend the Center’s annual board meeting for an update on past & present happenings and future plans.  Snacks and coffee provided.

M, 7/20 Discover Your World: Catch me if you can: The search for Herps Youth
9:00 – 11:30a.m . Herptiles (herps) are those awesome animals known as reptiles and amphibians. Meet some of our live herps and learn about their amazing adaptations! We may also go exploring to see what kind of herps live here at the Discovery Center . Join us for some slimy, scaly, slithery fun!5 – 10 year olds. $8 member $10 non-member.

T, 7/21 Adventure Club: River Tubing Youth
9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Enjoy a day of fun in the sun and tubing down the Manitowish River . We’ll stop for some game breaks and a campfire cookout. 11 – 14 year olds. $30 member $35

W, 7/22 Nature Craft: Dream Catchers Family
10 a.m. A Native American tradition to protect you while you sleep, dream catchers are said to catch the bad dreams and let the good dreams come through to you. Join Naturalist Licia Johnson as she tells the story of the dream catcher and instructs us on how to create one out of natural materials. All materials provided. $5 per person.

F, 7/24 Gresham Creek Canoe Trip Family
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Paddle the diverse and less traveled Gresham Creek flowing into Middle Gresham Lake, Lower Gresham Lake and finishing at Hwy H. Surrounded mostly by state land, this gem offers many habitat types allowing for both water and forest birds as well as a diverse group of mammals. Total distance is 2 miles and is moderately strenuous. Canoe and kayak rentals available for an additional charge. Preregistration Required $20.00 member $25.00 non-member, $15 youth 16 and under

M, 7/27 Discover Your World: Wild Artist Youth
9:00 – 11:30a.m . This is the experience for the budding young artist with a flair for the wild. By learning special techniques and experimenting with different media, we’ll draw, paint, color, - all in the quest to “capture” our favorite things in nature. We may even borrow some natural “paint” from nature! 5 – 10 year olds. $8 member $10 non-member.

T, 7/28 Adventure Club: PenokeeMountain & Waterfall Exploration Youth

6:30 p.m. Every summer milkweed fields are filled with Monarch butterflies and caterpillars. Join a Discovery Center naturalist for this informative and fun program that includes a power-point focusing on the amazing life cycles, ecology, and migrations patterns of the monarch. 9:00-4:00 Join the Discovery Center staff as they take you back in time to the year 1804. Hop aboard the 26foot canvas old town warrior canoe and take a leisurely paddle around Mercer Lake while learning about the local history of Mercer. Our space is limited in this time machine so please sign up at the Discovery Center or come on down to the Discovery Center booth at Loon Days. Trips leave the Mercer Lake Boat Landing at the top of every hour starting at 9am , 10am , 11am , 3pm , and 4pm . $5.00 per person

6:00 The spirit of the Northwoods is captured in the haunting calls of common loon. Join Sandy Gillum, local ecologist and author, to learn about what this handsome species is teaching us about the lakes we love. Are they our "canary in the coal mine?" Sandy is also the author of Loon Summer, an amazing account of loon parenting for adults and children to share. Following her program, books and book signing will be available. 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. In 2001 and 2008 Sharon dove to Lady Elgin, a paddle wheeler that went down off Winnetka, Illinois in 1860. 300 people, including her great great grandmother perished in the disaster. Sharon will share her connection with this wreck, what she discovered during her dives, and the ecological changes she observed in the lake between the years. Start your night with complimentary appetizers, a cash bar, and mingling prior to this evening’s entertaining presentation. $12 member $15 non-member

S 9:00a.m.- Su 1:00p.m. Join TWA for a Weekend with Wolves. Learn about wolf ecology, wolf monitoring techniques, and the latest wolf issues from biologists and educators immersed in this focus. We will spend part of the time in the classroom and part in the field surveying wolf pack territories. Participants will assist with wolf howling surveys and learn a few skills in wolf tracking identification. This workshop meets the ecology qualifications for becoming a DNR Volunteer Carnivore Tracker. Meals and accommodations in bunkhouses included. Preregistration required. This May, WWA announced its list of Wetland Gems, 100 high quality wetland habitats that are critically important to Wisconsin’s biodiversity and provide our communities with valuable functions, services, recreational and educational opportunities. WWA Outreach Programs Director Katie Beilfuss will announce the Wetland Gems sites in the region. Join Discovery Center naturalists and biologist Susan Knight from UW Trout Lake field station as we tour the Center’s bogwalk and unveil our new Vernal Pools interpretive station and boardwalk. A trip to the nearby Toy Lake Bog, a Wetland Gem, will also take place

3:00-6:00 p.m Located in South-Central Iron County, this 22,343 acres flowage has 212 miles of shoreline, is 90 percent state owned, includes 195 Islands and offers many opportunities to enjoy wildlife in a remote and wild setting. The Wildlife Pontoon Boat Tour has space for 8 participants and is guided by a professional naturalist. The tour follows the wild shores of the Turtle Flambeau Flowage, providing wildlife viewing opporturnities along the way. You may come upon breathtaking views of nesting eagles and ospreys, catch a glimpse of the common loon, or even discover mink fishing on the shore. 1:00- 4:30 All humans are gifted with unique insights, styles and talents. Artists like Emily Carr, Grant Wood, the Group of 7 and Georgia O’Keefe, used their own life stories as the basis for their artistic expression.   Join biologist and artist Terry Daulton for this workshop about re-discovering our creative energies and making opportunities to share our own life stories.    Find relaxation and inspiration through drawing, nature journaling, and drawing on location in this afternoon session. Media will include watercolor pencil, charcoal stick and india ink. All materials provided. Preregistration required $25 members $30 nonmembers

9:00 a.m. This remarkable stand of older growth hemlock, yellow birch, and sugar maple trees has been toted as one of the largest (possibly the largest) stand of old –growth hemlock –hardwood forests in Wisconsin. Join the naturalist as they guide the group along the wonderful and diverse trampers trail. Meet at the Discovery Center - shuttle provided. Preregistration Required. $12 member $15 non-member.

1:00 p.m. If you’re a butterfly lover this is a program you don’t want to miss! Start off by learning about the history and life cycle of the Monarch butterfly. Then we will go outside and try to collect and tag real live Monarchs using small identification stickers issued by Monarch Watch. $8 member $10 non-member $5 youth 16 and under; Family Rate available.

M, 8/24 LakeLevel Monitoring Adult
10:00-11:00 am Water levels in many Wisconsin lakes have changed substantially over the past decade. The Discovery Center and the Trout Lake UW Limnology Station have created a program for citizen scientists to track the water levels trends on their own lakes. A discussion on lake health and ecology will be followed by a demonstration of how lake level monitoring equipment is used on the Discovery Center’s Statehouse Lake. Donations appreciated.

9:00 a.m. – 2:00p.m. Travel across the Palmer Lake by canoe to the Tenderfoot Forest Reserve. At this 971-acre preserve, you can hike through 500 acres of old-growth forest and explore nearly four miles of undeveloped shoreline on the pristine waters of Tenderfoot, Roach, and Mirror lakes. 6 mile canoe and 2 mile hike rated Moderate to Strenuous Canoe and kayak rentals available for an additional charge.
